This course starts by looking at the role of ICT within small organisations. You will have to use your ICT skills to solve problems for other people in different situations. You will need to give good reasons for your various solutions. You are likely to need a range of skills including creating websites, spreadsheets and databases. This Unit is Assess in the June of Year 10 by the examining body - AQA. The course starts by building additional database skills, then looks at a number of sample assessments before the "live" one is introduced.
Autumn 1: Flat File Databases (Access)
Developing a Contacts database Download the Contacts example - Please be aware that you must enable the options everytime you start the database in school, otherwise the buttons will not work.
Now add details either of people you know or a fictional list. Try to complete between 10 - 20 entries. On some of these attempt to copy and paste images in. You may need to add new Titles and Counties. You can also look at the Printing Lists option, but only use the view rather than print options. Think of what more functionality you would want from this, as the goal will then be to add this in. Are there extra details (Date of Birth) or extra lists (Birthdays) needed? HWK: Zip your database and email it to me (tgm@kesbath.com)!
"MyDownloads" is a company with the need for a better "system". Their database has been created, however this needs to be extended. Download the database and read about what you need to add. HWK: Watch The 9 Query Lesson twice before next lesson, if this seems very hard then watch Query1 & Query2!
Now add the VAT to MyDownloads and create a Report. Can you think of other lists you might need? Create your own queries and Reports to solve these needs. Zip your database and email it to me (tgm@kesbath.com).
The "query" represents a range of processing, from filtering (searching) to sorting and numeric calculations. Queries can be based on tables or other queries. There are also "totalling queries. Download this "Birds" database. Add an image field and a Form to edit all of the existing data by using the Wizard and then amending the layout. Add at least 5 images. Now create a range of queries to analyise the data and reports to display it.HWK: Check that you can do all the skills listed in the Assessment below and look at the database to be used.
Further ideas can be found in the ECDL-DB booklet. There are booklets for Presentations and Word Processing as well.
Internal Controlled Assessment No1: Download the zipped database < you should copy the access file out of this folder before using. You should look at the database before the assessment. The Questions are password protected. Your teacher will give you the password at the start of the Assessment. At the end of the Assessment... zip your database and email it to your teacher. You will need to be able to create Reports that are based on queries - including totalling ones, add fields to the table, create and edit a form to include images and buttons.
Autumn 2: Spreadsheet Skills - A quick refresh!
Have a read of the first 20 pages of ECDL - SS booklet. Learn the details on PDF page 20 (Paper Page 15!). Set up the spreadsheet as shown on PDF Page 21 (Paper Page 16)- carry out the tasks in the work booklet from this page forward. HWK: Learn the terms (PDF 20) & ensure you are on PDF Page 38 before the start of next lesson.
Resume from PDF Page 44 (that is footer page 39 on Freezing) of the ECDL - SS. PDF Pages 39-43 are not appropriate to the latest version of Excel.
Read Functions < experiment with those given. HWK: Learn the Functions!
Autumn 3: Applying Skills to New Organisations.
You will need to study these carefully. Your teacher will guide you through them, breaking each one down to various sub parts You can have a look at these very old pieces!

Practice
11S- "The Purple Spiders" (The AQA Speciman)
11 - Anna's Driving School. + AQA Analysis
HWK: Read part of the Unit2-Support Document
Tests: Specfic things you must do to prove that it works. Hyperlinks work on a website, Calculations with given inputs on a spreadsheet or Specfic searches to carry out on a database. There are numerous examples in this file.
The "Real" Assignment PDF file will be emailed to you at the start of the Controlled Assessment < Check your email. You will have a paper version on Tuesday & Thursday, but not on Wednesday when you can click to see the PDF (@ KES Only)! You may not discuss the Analysis with others either during the lesson (Test conditions) or between sessions. The file for Task 2 is also available (@KES Only). This is presently a csv, as I await a reply from AQA as to whether it can be converted to Access!
The above "lessons" probably show all the skills needed for carrying out the work. If you cannot do a specfic aspect that is not shown in the lessons you should ask your teacher, who will then create an additional "class" lesson.
Under this specification the school is not permitted to give you a Word Template on how to prepare your work. However you are strongly advised to set it out as in this example. To help watch the lessons in Word 2007(c) on Tables (first 3) and last 2 on Headers / Footers and table of Contents. To ensure the work is completed on time each lesson will focus on an aspect of the controlled assessment. Homework: You cannot actually do the whole of the controlled assessment at home. What you can do at home is research (problem & software), experiment and build prototypes. This should mean that you can carryout the work in class quickly and effectively. This homework applies to the end of the Unit. The Unit will last 14 School Weeks!
Nov 3/8/9: Unit 2 (2013) Controlled Assessment (Analysis) - Read the paragraph above! Format Analysis, Print Version for marking and email a copy to TGM. Obtain AQA Analysis. Print your analysis again (white copy) and label the PC's & tests you identified with the numbers given. 3/35
Nov 10: Convert the CSV file.(<See Access 2007b Lesson 13). View this Sample Work < look at Implmentation and Design. Screenshot and describe the Key stages of the CSV conversion process. Add Design of Database Tables. 4/35
Nov 16/17: Complete the "Welcome Day" Model task (pages 20-21) and print. Hand in at end of lesson. Once completed... Ensure you have taken screenshots and added comments about what they show. Watch Excel 2007b lesson 8. You may wish to watch lesson 6 & Lesson 7 - Look at the 2011 Model Example Write up. 6/35
Spreadsheets: Only use SUM(A2:B7) when adding rows or columns - not for add of other cells / divide / minus / multiply like =C3*(B2/B3)-D6. Always use "Cell Addresses" like B4,C7 rather than raw numbers like 7 or 14. If you plan to Replicate / Fill formulae you may need to add $'s to cell names to fix locations (ie G$4 or $G$4 or $G4 depending on need)
Nov 22/23/24: . Design: What & Why (read page 4 of booklet <Use Save Target as @ KES only - to get a copy of the file) Go back to the Database Task. Add Design of Database Tables to a Word document this is part of what you are going to do - See the 2011 Database Design Example! Design Plans of Interactive Presentation - again this is what you are going to do..See the 2011 Website Design Example! 9/35
Dec 1: Brainstorm and Prototype for Task 2: Work in pairs or a three to develop a presentation on a similiar theme to task 2. You must not work on the actual controlled assessment, but it can be similar. You may use / adapt the Performance critera whilst experimenting, though the topic should be different! This will help to formulate your ideas, look at the skills and improve your Design layouts from last week. Homework: Update your Design Layouts based on ideas out of today's lesson.
Dec 6/7/8: Design Why: Your design plans - sketched and scanned or created in software other then Dreamweaver for your website should be added to your Word document write up file. Now add Reasons & Choices (linked to AQA PC's<Use Save Target as @ KES only) - to get a copy of the file for your design. This is best done as a table, where you copy and paste in the AQA PC's, add a column to the right and say why your design plans above meet each of these. (More advice on Page 4 of the booklet). Now Implementation: Build your planned Database / Presentation / Website based on your detailed Design: Screenshot and describe the Key stages within Word. You should follow exactly your designs. If your designs are not detailed or accurate enough then amend your design. You can also amend your design reasons / choices. (More advice on Page 4 of the booklet).12/35
